Industrial visit for S4 & S6 MT batch to Autocast , Cherthala and HMT, Kalamaserry in Jan 2015

An industrial visit to Autocast and HMT were conducted in Jan 2015. The students were accompanied by Dr.K.G.Samuel, HOD, and other faculties of the department. The visit was really worth for the students, as they could observe the industrial aspects of foundry and castings at their finger touch. The visit was well appreciated by everyone.

Two day workshop on “FERROUS EXTRACTIVE METALLURGY-2015”, Jan 8-9 ,2015

A two day workshop on ferrous extractive metallurgy was conducted on behalf of Metallurgists’ desk in association with Department of Metallurgy, AJCE during Jan 8-9, 2015. The main objective of this workshop was to cultivate the knowledge of process metallurgy on metallurgical engineers and to know about an ancient field of metallurgy existing in India. Mr.Ashok k, CSIR-NML,Mr.R saravanakumar, Air Bus (IIT kanpur alumni), Mr.S Nagaraj, JSW steel ltd. were the resource persons. The workshop was well appreciated by the Principal, faculty and the students.

Welcome to the Department of Metallurgy, AJCE

B.Tech in Metallurgy is a 4-year undergraduate course in engineering. This unique stream in engineering helps students gain technical knowledge in diverse aspects of Physical Metallurgy, Extractive Metallurgy and Mechanical Metallurgy. The manufacture, design, production and testing of the metals and alloys and their deformation and failure mechanisms are the main contents of the course curriculum.

The three main branches of metallurgy are Extractive Metallurgy (involves extracting metal from its ore), Physical Metallurgy (deals with solving problems of material selection, developing the sorts of metallic alloys needed for different types of manufacturing and construction work) and Mechanical Metallurgy (involves gathering information on mechanical properties and various types of material deformation and failure mechanisms). Metallurgy also encompasses study of exotic materials in pure and alloy form having numerous applications in various industries viz, Nuclear, Aerospace, Cryogenic, Petrochemical, Marine, Defense, Electronics etc.

It is one of the important and emerging branches of engineering with extensive applications demanding high performance materials for extreme temperature, fatigue and creep resistance, strength to weight ratio etc.
